Scheduling Writing Time

I've been a terrible blogger lately. Not so much here, but on my family blog (that I haven't updated in 6 weeks or more.) I think it's because I don't have a deadline. With this collaborative blog I have people who are counting on my post being written before Tuesday morning. But with my own blog I know that there is no one depending on me to post every day. (And it's a good thing there isn't!)

So, I've decided to try something new. I'm going to give myself a deadline for my family blog just like I have here. I'm going to spend the next 12 weeks updating it at least every Friday morning. I can post more than once a week but no less. Just like setting boundaries with social media worked for me last fall, this will help to create some discipline in my writing. And hopefully it will help me stay more current in updating family and friends. Besides, it won't be too long before I'll have even more subjects to photograph and write about. We found out this past week that we'll be adding a little girl to our family in a few months. So I should get in the habit of updating more frequently now before the mayhem of 3 kids sets in.

Do you have a set time in your day or week for blogging? How do you make it a priority in your life without letting it take over?

  1. The way I do it is, find five things I want to post about and then I write up all my posts and then either schedule them to post on their own or leave them in draft status and post them on the day I want them to.

I try to use a schedule for myself looking something like this:

Monday: devotional (something from God's word that has really been speaking to me)

    Tuesday: recipe

Wednesday: homeschooling information or what we have going on

Thursday: stuff about my kids (trips and just fun stuff)

Friday: usually any reviews I need to do.

Saturday and Sunday are just left open.

I also read blogs about freebies so if I see something that I think might interest my readers, I post it on my blog and then reference where I found it.

    Hope this helps!

  2. I do it much like Jennifer!!
Monday: is "Motivational Monday" - a Bible verse that speaks to me with a challenge
Tuesday: I join in with a fellow blogger to post an inspirational or just fun song!!
Wednesday: is "Wordless Wednesday" where I post a pic or more that needs no (or very little) words
Thursday: is "Thankful Thursday" this helps me to just stop and be thankful for everything around me
Friday: is a free day so what ever inspires me
and then I take the weekend off
    Hope this is helpful!

  3. I use Google calendar and plan out months in advance what topics to write about. I write in the morning because I'm "fresh" and my son is content to play and watch Sesame Street for an hour or more. It's great!

Also, I write on paper instead of at the computer because I get too easily distracted! (ie: I started this comment 15 minutes ago and just now finished it bc Twitter got in the way!)

Oh and I use Livewriter and keep my posts in Drafts and either schedule posts to publish on their own or do it myself. It's very handy!

    Hope that helps :)

  4. Those are such great ideas! I write in such spurts - sometimes everyday for a couple of weeks but then I'll put it off for weeks. I like the idea of deadlines. Thanks!

  5. The only deadline I have is my "Good News Monday" post which is a summary of my hubby's Sunday sermon. I do want to be more deliberate about posting frequently because many times I have great ideas but if I don't jot them down, then I forgot and a week can go by without a single post.

I have heard of writing ahead of time and saving the post for a later date. I think I may start doing that.
