I'm not so good with resolutions. I don't usually make them and I definitely don't like them. Last year I wrote about making-over some of my usual resolutions. Looking back, I did okay, but there's definitely still room for improvement in most of those areas. (Isn't there always?!) So, while I want to continue those efforts, I would like to tackle a very specific resolution this year. In 2010 I would like to read more books.
I was inspired partly by my friend, Anna, at The Sage Room who resolved to read 52 books in 2009. She succeeded - and while I might not read that many, I do want to read more books this year. I am guilty of watching WAY too much television and not engaging my mind enough. And since I have already finished 4 books I think I'm off to a fantastic start. I'm also going to tackle more non-fiction than I usually do. (Of course, I only have to read 3 or 4 non-fiction books all year to do that!)
The other half of my resolution is to read more to my kids. I can't tell you how many times I brush off a request that I read them a book. How sad is that? There is nothing that I do in my day that is more important than reading to my boys. I would like to show them how important they are to me by spending more time reading to them in 2010.
Are you planning on doing more reading this year? Any books I should put on my list while I try to read more?

Alicia, TOO funny ... my blog post today has the exact same title!! Great minds and all. :-) I'm reading "I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent" by E.D. Hill and I am finding it very good. Also, I am LOVING "Simple Life" by Thom & Art Rainer.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading A Praying Life by Paul Miller. It's the best book I've ever read on prayer!
ReplyDeleteAlicia, I am a book lover, and while I do well to read quite a bit of fiction, I don't read enough...for lack of better terms "self-help" material. I too am guilty of mush brain, and find at the end of the day, it is easier for me to laugh at mindless comedy than to focus on reading, but I am pressing on. Just wanted to recommend a great fiction read...Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin, just finished with book club, second book of his I have read and love his style...he resides not far from you and writes stories around waterways...just thought you might enjoy...Let me know if you have any suggestions for me.
ReplyDeleteI am almost at the end of a similar challenge, I called it 52 books in 52 weeks and I started last February. I have been posting my book reviews every Monday to keep me on track! I only have 4 books left to go! Reading more is definitely a good goal. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHere are the last 3 books I've read, and I got lucky, they were ALL great--"Child Sense" by Priscilla Dunstan really, really helped me understand my kids (and myself!) better. I just finished "Sarah's Key" (Holocaust heartbreaker!!) and before that, "The Help." I'm trying to think of anything else...OH!!!! "Organize Now!" is on my desk right this minute.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear what you read! I also read fun fiction when I can (Jodi Picoult, etc.)...sometimes my brain needs a rest!
Click my name for summaries of the most life-changing books I've read and a link to kids' books my son and I love. Happy reading!
