I have heard the news reports about how reading to your kid from birth helps them be smarter, do better in school and just be better people...or something like that! When I was pregnant with Dietrich, I would say that I was going to speak Spanish to him and read to him every day. He is now 13 months old and I have not done either of these things! His Uncle Eddie who is just learning Spanish has spoken more Spanish to him than I have!
For the month of November, I want to start the habit of reading to Dietrich at least once a day and speak to him some in Spanish. I guess I could read his Spanish books to him and that would count for both activities that day!
My question to you is: Should I read different books to him every day? I've heard that toddlers love repetition. So should I read him the same book for a few days and then move on? Advice please!

I'd do both. Pick out a few books that you enjoy and read those everyday. He'll soon start bringing you his favorites too. (I'm personally partial to Sandra Boynton's.) And then rotate some others into the mix. We have a ton of books at our house and if I put them all on the boy's shelves they end up on the floor. So I have a big plastic bin with most of them stored under the bed. Every other week or so I put away the ones that have been out and pull out a new set. It seems like we are always getting new books that way!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alicia. Pick some favorites to read over and over. I love when they can read the book to you!
ReplyDeleteBut to keep things interesting, throw in some different ones too.
I too need to be better at reading to E, but I will let you do the Spanish without me!
James loves the Usborne Spanish picture book! We've had it since last Christmas and he still wants to look at it every day. We also read The Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear, Brown Bear almost every day. We even had to get a new copy of the Caterpillar book. But he's so cute saying "pickle!"
