It's Easier to Travel with a Baby When...

We've done a little traveling with our little guy in the past 10 months, but only to see the grandparents. One set lives about 4 1/2 hours away and the other lives about 6 1/2 hours away. At first, he would just sleep in the car most of the way, but recently he's been awake a lot more. He still doesn't seem to mind it too much though!

When we go visit, both sets have a crib or Pack N Play for him to sleep in. This makes life so much easier! My parents also have a baby center disk for him to play in and of course toys we used to play with when we were little! Our car does not have to be filled to the top with this extra baby cargo.

We just went to visit my parents and quickly realized that he needed a high chair to sit in while eating. It is no longer possible to hold him and feed him at dinner time! My dad was able to run to Target and grab a cute booster seat/high chair that straps to the chair. It even came with a toy, so it entertains him at times other than just meals!

Now that he is a little more mobile and pulling up on everything, childproofing the rooms was a must when we arrived. I pretty much took everything off of the coffee table and moved it higher. Then we had to go to the Dollar Store and get some child safety covers for the plugs. These are just a few things that grandparents might not have thought about in a long time!

We sure do have a lot of fun visiting family, but who knew it would be so much work?! What is something you can't live without while traveling with your baby?

I've recently discovered a website which will be especially helpful when traveling with a baby. www.babysaway.com is a rental service of all the major items a baby needs - crib, pack n play, highchair, car seat, etc. I haven't used it yet, but it will make the next vacation travel a lot less stressful!

Also do you know of any web sites that help to know what to pack? (besides flylady, though that was helpful). We did get these awesome trays :http://www.familytravelgear.com/page/FTG/PROD/car-snack-play-travel-tray

  3. bubbles and books were the only thing that entertained our little guy on the 15 hour drive to florida last summer. his big brother and i took turns sitting with him in the back seat, blowing bubbles and reading. this year we're taking a much shorter trip to houston, only 4 hours, but this year we are also near to the terrible twos. we've traded one issue for another. i do prefer to travel with him during nap time, so he'll sleep at least some of the way.

  4. Kama, I just saw your comment about expecting again!!! Congrats - you are gonna have a bounty full of blessings and your hands completely full!!!

And, something I need when traveling with the kids - our youngest MUST have his blankie! It's crazy how he is attached to it, but he won't go to sleep without one!

    Take care :)

  5. a dvd player ... my in-law's live 8 hours away (with children it takes closer to 12) ... we would never make it without the dvd player - once we were stuck on a closed section of I-90 in NY and it took almost an hour before they realized we stopped moving... we also bring lots of snacks...and our last trip, i went to stores and found a handful of cheapie "gifts" - new sunglasses, tiny toys, tiny games (think dollar store)...we have been making this trip with our kids since the first was a few months old (he's now 5)...i recommend traveling at night with the very young...it doesn't work for us any more, but it used to be fabulous since they would sleep most of the trip...
