I could have been so prepared for motherhood. I bought all the books, knew all the websites and had tons of women around me, who were mothers, to saturate me in words of wisdom. But honestly, who has the energy to read, surf the web or listen when you're a thousand months pregnant?? Not me! I strategically stored my energy for eating and waddling from one doctor's appointment to the next. I'm a conservationist, if you will.
For some strange reason, I felt like my husband and I could just wing this parenting thing. Oddly enough, that is the same approach I took to High School exams. I was on the honor roll, so it turned out okay. The husband obviously didn't agree, since he was studying up all the time on different subjects of pregnancy and parenting. Yes, he knew more about my pregnancy than I did. He was the brains, I was the transportation. Fair enough, I say.
I do remember small portions of advice given to me by Supermoms. Although, I probably started practicing some of the advice a little too early. I cannot tell you how many people said...'now remember, you sleep when the baby sleeps'.... Apparently I thought the baby slept 80% of the time in the womb, because I'm pretty sure I slept through 80% of my pregnancy.
I kid.....sort of.
After 3 years of parenting, I can honestly say that only one piece of advice that I received sticks out as the most effective. And it wasn't just given to me when I was pregnant. My mother lived her advice, which I think is why it stuck with me. She's always said that a constant prayer life makes up for your short-comings as a parent. We all have our weaknesses, and in parenting they seem to be multiplied because there is so much at stake. There are so many little choices we have to make for our kids that we want to get exactly right. But I think the most important thing I can do for my son is call his name out to his Creator. To saturate his life in prayer, surrender the control that I pretend to have and be freed up to enjoy Bryson as the gift that he is.
Kama, I'm so excited to meet your little one. I pray God's favor on your family, and that His love would be so clearly revealed to you through the miracle of this child.
Amber is a SAHM near Dallas where she enjoys moving and packing boxes (just kidding). There was recently a huge house swap in our family and we've been moving for the past month I think!! Amber is Amy's sister who is Kama's sister-in-law. She has an adorable three year old son named Bryson and is married to Nathan.
These words of advice are so comforting!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amber! What a great reminder that we don't have to be Super Mom!
